Daybreak: Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley's first morning on the sofa

"We're clinging on!" giggled Christine Bleakley on Daybreak this morning, although whether she was referring to her debut with Adrian Chiles as the new face of ITV's morning "news" programme, or to Chiles's knee – to which she was, indeed, clinging with the tenacity of a barnacle to craggy rock – was unclear.

As you may have heard, the mighty House of GMTV, subject to many critical slings and arrows over the years, was finally felled by the might of Chiles and Bleakley, hired to host Daybreak at a reported combined cost of £10m. And for £10m one would hope that presenters could do more than cling on, as they attempt to master tasks such as sitting on a sofa and reading an Autocue and, occasionally, even walking and talking at the same time…

The England women's rugby team know the value of plaits

"Most of my time is spent in my room, French-plaiting other girls' hair," said Rachael Burford, centre player in the England women's rugby team, in the Sunday Times over the weekend. No snide comments about this being what all girls do when they get together, please – Burford, and her braided friends then go out on the rugby pitch where, if you caught any of the recent world cup, you will have noticed that the women are just as fearless as their male counterparts.

"It has got to the point now when I feel a bit weird if I don't do someone's hair before a game," said Burford…

England rue missed chances as New Zealand win fourth World Cup running

Heartbreaking does not begin to describe it. Until their dying days, the rugby women of England will remember the events of this evening and regret what might have been. Their failure to prevent New Zealand winning a fourth successive World Cup, however, tells barely half the story…

Women's World Cup final: England can end New Zealand's monopoly

The coach of Australia's women's team summed it up nicely when asked to predict the outcome of tomorrow evening's World Cup final at The Stoop. "Well, New Zealand have the better players, but England might just have the better team."

John Manenti had just watched his side's 15-0 semi-final defeat by Catherine Spencer's resurgent England and was full of admiration for the hosts' defensive qualities, which prevented his side coming even close to scoring a try…

TV review: Real Crime: Yvonne Fletcher and Digging for Britain

There was something defiantly old-school about Real Crime: Yvonne Fletcher (ITV1): the unnecessary reconstruction featuring an Yvonne Fletcher lookalike who didn't look anything like Yvonne Fletcher; the newsreel footage of the British ambassador's wife singing the national anthem at Tripoli airport; Leon Brittan looking and sounding every bit as smarmy now as he did when he was home secretary in 1984.

As a recreation of a time when Libya was considered a major threat, Real Crime worked well. But it wasn't a period pastiche; it was a documentary about the shooting of Fletcher outside the Libyan embassy while policing an anti-Gaddafi demonstration…

Apple's Ping - a capsule review

Apple has ditched the CD in the iTunes logo, upgraded its iPod range and revamped Apple TV, as we learned last night. Chief executive Steve Jobs also upped Apple's social media game with Ping – a music recommendation and sharing feature that has been added to the latest version of iTunes, iTunes 10.

Users with an iTunes Store login (there are 160 million of those worldwide, and they are the engine behind Apple's money-making content machine) can now click the 'Ping' tab in iTunes, create a profile and begin following and being followed by like-minded music fans…

England to face New Zealand in women's World Cup final

England's women last night emulated the men's side who 19 years ago reached the final of their home World Cup across the road from here at Twickenham. On Sunday Catherine Spencer's side will face New Zealand, who have won the last two World Cups and looked formidable in defeating France 45-7 in their semi-final earlier in the evening.

"This has prepared us perfectly for the final against New Zealand," said Spencer…

Incredible Scenes; and Misanthropes

GROUNDHOG DAYIt's national Bloke in Car Park Day 2010 (summer editiion), and across the country gentlemen have been donning their suits and taking to their nearest tarmaced surface for a full day of not-doing-anything-really thrills.

Here at Fiver Towers we've been backing this endeavour by sending some of our own trained scribes to stand in top car parks nationwide, and can now report that Mrs Roberts from Cheadle left the Arndale Centre this morning with what appeared to be a new pair of shoes from Varanni and a couple of magazines in a WH Smith carrier bag. Meanwhile at Woolley Edge service station unusual levels of activity were noticed after a build-up of traffic between junctions 38 and 39 of the southbound M1, leading to the M&S Simply Food selling out of ham and cheese sandwiches shortly before 1pm…
